Haden’s Head
Office, situated in Rydalmere, Sydney achieved a whole building 4 Star
ABGR (Australian Building Greenhouse Rating) through the energy saving
schemes initiated by employees.
The challenge to obtain a base line rating and improve the building’s
rating further was an outcome of Haden’s involvement in the 3CBDs
programme, jointly coordinated by the City of Sydney, North Sydney and
Parramata City Councils. The programme is aimed at assisting tenants to
achieve energy efficiency in their current buildings.
Haden’s decision to join the 3CBDs program was the result of a
grassroots Environmental Sustainability Committee formed by employees
occupying the building, including members from Haden’s sister companies
O’Donnel Griffin, WF Energy Controls and parent company Norfolk, an ASX
listed company. The Committee developed an Energy Action Plan to reduce
the energy consumption of the building.
This included:
- reduction of hours of operation of A/C systems to suit the
occupancy hours
- Installation of electrical submeters on all lighting and power
circuits
- lighting replacement with higher efficiecny T5 lamps and
electronic ballasts
- installing boiling unit timers
- energy saving controls on IT equipment enabled
- LCD screens for PCs throughout
- Staff awareness and communication program
- Energy consumption tracking and performance reporting
- use of blinds to facilitate light and heating/cooling
efficiency.
The rating is based on the 12 month operational energy use throughout
the building, and reflects the office's energy performance and lower
emissions of greenhouse gases.

demonstrate our commitment that Haden’s facilities and processes seek to
minimise our impact on the environment” said David Rafter, CEO Norfolk
Mechanical.
The Committee and employees are now focusing on raising the rating to
4.5 Stars by June this year to meet the 3CBDs commitment.
